NCI research advocates receive both formal and informal training to help prepare them for participation in science and communications activities. The Office of Advocacy Relations (OAR) provides links to online tutorials, conducts orientation teleconferences, and hosts a 2 ½ day peer review workshop for its members.
  • Online Resources for Advocates

The Office of Advocacy Relations has created a list of helpful Web site resources to acquaint you with the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, various cancer topics, clinical trials, the grants process, epidemiology & statistics, and drug development.

  • Orientation for Research Advocates
A general orientation about the National Cancer Institute, and the roles and responsibilities of research advocates is provided in an Orientation PowerPoint slide presentation.

  • Peer Review Training Workshop

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has developed an innovative training curriculum and other resources to help research advocates become effective participants in the NCI peer review process. The Institute's Office of Advocacy Relations has designed a 2 ½ day workshop curriculum, Preparing Consumer Advocates to Participate in Peer Review, that focuses on the scientific, technical, and cultural aspects of NCI peer review, and how advocates can more effectively represent the collective views of survivors, patients, and family members during the grant review process.

Each workshop is conducted by a multidisciplinary training team, which includes advocates, university scientists, NCI staff, and training facilitators. Applying adult learning principles, the collaborative team delivers technical presentations and serves as a resource for interactive small and large group discussions. Mock peer reviews are also conducted to demonstrate how grant applications are reviewed and scored, and how advocates address human subjects concerns during the peer review process.

This section provides a variety of tools and learning materials from the workshop, Preparing Consumer Advocates to Participate in Peer Review.
